Small businesses may need help organising products and getting a shop ready to launch. A clearly scoped setup package gives clients a defined set of tasks and a practical handover.
Step by step
- Practise Shopify store basics. Use a practice store or your own project. Change a theme, arrange navigation and add sample products before offering the service. About 1-3 days.
- Choose a simple starter package. For example, offer theme setup, catalogue upload and a handover guide. State what the client must supply and exclude work such as custom app development. About 1-2 hours.
- Make a small demonstration store. Use fictional products, or get permission before showing a real project. Take clear screenshots and note why you made the setup choices you did. About 1-2 days.
- Agree the project in writing. Ask about products, brand, domain, shipping, payment methods and the desired launch date. Write down the scope, price, delivery plan and revision process before beginning. About 30-60 minutes.
- Collect complete product information. Ask the client for product names, descriptions, prices, images and variant information in an organised spreadsheet. Check for missing details before starting the upload. About 1-3 hours, depending on catalogue size.
- Set up the agreed shop design. Configure the agreed theme, homepage, navigation, collections and product pages to match the client brief. Check the layout on desktop and mobile. About 1-3 days.
- Set agreed store settings. Configure the agreed domain, payments and shipping settings. Ask the client to confirm their own business and tax details; do not guess them. About 1-3 hours.
- Check the shop against the brief. Review the catalogue, images, prices, menus, cart and checkout against the client's requirements. Fix issues you can reproduce, and ask the client to test account-specific settings. About 2-4 hours.
- Hand over the completed shop. Provide a short screen recording or call showing how to manage products and orders. Confirm the agreed work is complete and keep a record of the invoice and payment. About 30-60 minutes.
Your first 15 minutes
Build a small demonstration Shopify store with fictional products, then write a one-page setup offer that lists exactly what the client will receive.
The money
Price a defined package by estimating setup time, client communication, checking, revisions and your costs. State what is excluded and charge separately for agreed extra work; online bids and directory prices are not guaranteed earnings.
Example only: one week's work brings in £300 and has £20 of costs, leaving £280 before tax. A separate example in euros: €300 income minus €20 costs leaves €280 before tax. These figures are illustrations, not typical prices or promised earnings.
The rules
There’s no specific licence for setting up a Shopify store. Agree the work you’ll do with your client. Check the tax, data-protection and consumer rules that apply to your work and location. In the UK, whether you need to pay the ICO data-protection fee can depend on what you do and who is responsible for the personal data.
UK and Northern Ireland
- Tax and Self Assessment. You can earn up to £1,000 a year in trading income under the trading allowance. If you earn more, report your income to HMRC. The £1,000 is gross income, before expenses GOV.UK Tax Help for Hustles. If you need to register for Self Assessment, do so by 5 October after the tax year ends GOV.UK.
- VAT. You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover is over £90,000. Check the current rules and your circumstances with HMRC or a tax adviser Business.gov.uk.
- Data protection and ICO fee. Use the ICO self-assessment tool to check if you need to pay a fee. The ICO says you are likely to be exempt if you hold customer details only for your own accounts and transaction records. Exceptions may apply. This does not decide whether you need to pay a fee when you handle client or store-customer information. It can depend on who is the data controller and which entity has the client relationship ICO ICO. The ICO lists consultancy or advisory services to individuals and partnerships as examples that need a fee. It also lists advertising or marketing another person’s business, goods or services. Check the ICO guidance to see if your work fits these or another category that needs a fee ICO ICO.
- Scope and consumer queries. Put the package, price, revisions, handover and any cancellation arrangements in writing. Agree what product details and store settings your client must provide. Check them before launch. Don’t guess shipping, payment or tax information.
- Advertising and insurance. If you publish paid or affiliate promotional posts, label them clearly. For example, use “Ad” ASA. Consider suitable business insurance. There’s no rule here saying you need a particular policy for this service.
Ireland
- Income tax reporting. If you work in PAYE, register for self-assessment using Form 11 if your taxable non-PAYE income is over €5,000 or your gross non-PAYE income is over €30,000. Below those limits, declare your income on Form 12 through myAccount. Check your circumstances with Revenue or a tax adviser Revenue.
- VAT. The VAT threshold for services is €42,500. Check with Revenue whether and when it applies to your business Revenue.
- Business name. If you trade under a name other than your own, register the business name with the CRO. Online registration costs €20 CRO.
- Data handling. As a practical step, handle only the client information you need. Keep access secure and agree how you’ll manage access to the store.
- Scope, advertising and insurance. Put the package, price, revisions and handover in writing. Check any consumer-rule questions with an appropriate source. If you publish paid or affiliate promotional posts, label commercial content. For example, use “#Ad” CCPC. Consider suitable business insurance. There’s no rule here saying you need a particular policy for this service.
